My 2018 Goals!

Happy 2018 to you all!

By now I’ve finished my goals list for the year, and I have had to settle with the list being in my small little diary until I find a place and make up a giant goals board. So check it out:

2018 GOALS: 1. FINISH ZOMBIE BRO 2. SECURE SALES/ DISTRIBUTION AGENTS 3. GET INTO AT LEAST THREE FESTIVALS IN 2018

Zombie Bro was shot back in the second half of 2016 and it has been a slow burner. But there’s not too many micro-budget films that have a quick turnaround, so it was to be expected. The first festival I will be entering starts in February, it’s the Toronto International Film Festival. And yes, I am aware, it’s impossible to get into. But hey, you’ll never know if you never try. So right now, we are polishing off the sound, the music, the colour grade and the visual effects. And I am the one hustling everyone to get a move on.

As mentioned before, I have two sales agents interested in representing the film, and they haven’t even seen a complete finish yet! So whose to say... another few might jump on board. But seriously, fingers crossed to sign with one. It helps your chances getting into the best film festivals and also helps your chances on recuperating the money spent to make it and to pay the cast and crew.

So that’s at the top of the agenda for 2018. Next… 4. START AMAZING KIDS PARTIES TORONTO I am hoping to get straight back into kids parties while I’m over here and the team at Amazing Kids Parties Australia are thinking of helping me do that by opening up a Toronto/ Canada branch. Maybe then I won’t be affected by the terrible pay rate here and can also learn all about how to run a business. 5. FILM KIDZKIT 6. START YOUTUBE SERIES

For a few years now, I have had the idea of making a kids sketch show for YouTube. There’s actually not a lot of kids content on there that is professionally made. And with the move, I thought “hey, now is your time”. I’ve written over sixty skits so far and I also bought $500 worth of sound gear. Now all I have to do is cast the kids, find a reliable cinematographer and bob’s your uncle, kidZkit is born. 7. LIVE WITH MADDY 8. GET A PET FERRET

My best friend is moving over end of January and we are getting a ferret (maybe a hamster instead because of their lifespans). I’m so excited!!!

9. GET A GRANT 10. BE MENTORED BY A PROGRAM

I’m in the centre of the world now! There are grants, there are mentorships, there are opportunities that were not there for me in Australia. I’m hoping to find a program in Los Angeles that’s three months or less, that way I don’t need a visa but I still get to soak up all the knowledge and meet professional contacts. 11. A TRIP TO NEW YORK 12. SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS 13. VISIT QUEBEC

A bit of travel always clears my mind and thanks to my new location, nothing is too far away. I’m also very lucky because a handful of my favourite people now live in New York. The coolest person I know, Niall Ray is over there and my great friend Xanthe Paige is moving over ever very soon.

14. TAKE FRENCH CLASSES 15. DO SOME IMPROV

These are those goals that probably require me to pay for classes, and have a somewhat scheduled life - so… we will see how they go in 2018. 16. GET AN AGENT 17. BECOME UNION

Oh my, the union. Ha. Something we have in Australia that does not have the same rules over here. I am of course Non-Union at this stage. That means I can do Non-Union projects and audition for some Union projects. But my Union friends cannot act in anything Non-Union. So here is a little story for you, I wrote a short film for a film competition this month and thought of all the excellent actor friends that would star in it alongside me. But due to the ACTRA guidelines, the only way I can use my friends is by doing it through an ACTRA affiliated initiative (where everyone gets an equal percentage of profits) BUT I am not allowed to act alongside them, I can only be in the creative team. So really, I’m not going to be making much union work if I want to be in it. So it’s tragic for both parties really. As for the agent, it’s inevitable but I thought I’d toss it on the list, to keep reminding myself to actively submit for them. 18. GO TO AFM 2018 & TIFF 2018

These two are all about networking and pitching more ideas. I got a heap out of the 2017 American Film Market. And this year, I actually know what to prepare and who to contact and what a meeting really entails. 19. MEET A MAN I LOVE 20. LISTEN MORE, TALK LESS 21. MAKE A BUNCH OF NEW AMAZING FRIENDS 22. MAKE TORONTO MY NEW HOME

If all else fails this year, I’m already on track with these four. Well maybe just the bottom three, but I am meeting men on a regular basis. I am ready to embrace Toronto. It may be freakishly cold, there may be an enormous amount of mentally ill people on the streets, and there may even be a serial killer running around Church and Wellesley BUT it’s home and it already kind of feels like it.

LIFE GOALS: These ones I don’t really have a plan for yet, nor do they have an expiry date. Just things, that in my life I would like to accomplish.

23. PUBLISH TRAVEL BUGS: MARVIN & MAUDE BOOKS 24. GO TREE PLANTING 25. LEARN HOW TO ANIMATE & ANIMATE A WHOLE FEATURE FILM 26. VISIT EYGPT & DO THE JESUS WALK 27. MEET GUY SEBASTIAN 28. BE MENTORED BY TAIKA WAITITI 29. STUDY TO BECOME A SOCIAL WORKER/ PSYCHOLOGIST 30. BECOME A SUCCESSFUL FILMMAKER THAT MAKES THE WORLD A HAPPIER PLACE

And that’s it! Thanks for reading and I promise the next blog post will be a normal one updating you on all the progress I’ve made in the first month of 2018.

Happy New Year and may your best year be this one.

xx May
